ModSpace Completes Accelerated Construction of Barracks & Facilities for Marine Corps Base QuanticoState-of-the-art facilities include barracks for 600 Marines and administrative buildings, completed in Phase I and II, and award for Phase III SCIF facility project BERWYN, PA.November 10, 2008ModSpace, the nation's leading provider of modular building, storage, and services for temporary and permanent space needs, completed construction of an expansive new barracks facility at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. Having proven ModSpace's ability to deliver highly-evolved barracks and administrative buildings much faster and for less cost than traditional construction techniques in completing phase I and II of the project, the success has lead the Marine Corps to award Phase III to ModSpace. Phase III will be a 25,000 square-foot office addition with secure communications components. "We are proud of Phases I & II, as the base needed a complete customized space that would meet the highest Marine Corps standards and be ready in less than four months, because recruits were already scheduled to arrive," says Jay Grass, Director of Business Development, Government Services Division of ModSpace. "With no time to spare, we remained confident in solving any issues that could potentially become a challenge, because this is the type of problem we've designed our buildings to solve. We delivered the new facility on time and under budget. ModSpace construction technology is so efficient, that even with weather delays, we were able to get our Marines moved in less than four months from the date of the kick off. ModSpace only needed 120 days on the job to take the building from bare earth to completely functional. Having seen how well our system works and the quality living space we deliver, the Marine Corps have awarded us the third and final phased project." Before adding the new barracks, Marine Corps Base Quantico had no space to house the incoming 600 Officer School recruits expected to arrive on base May 15, 2008. These barracks, with full appointed facilities, house 600 Officer Candidate School recruits in the USMC's Grow the Force Program. Marine Corps Base Quantico turned to ModSpace to deliver a 44,000 square-foot open bay barracks complete with sleeping quarters, showers, restrooms and laundry facilities - meeting an aggressive timeline of 120 days to completion. Considering the demanding project schedule and the adverse weather and site conditions, ModSpace evaluated the situation to develop the most time critical and cost-effective foundation solution. The ModSpace construction services team collaborated with Marine Corps Base Quantico and engineers to seek alternate foundation systems. The end result saved the government tens of thousands of dollars and reduced the construction schedule by several weeks. "The scope and parameters of this project presented some unique challenges, and we were honored to be called to duty," says Grass "While some would say the 120-day window was daunting, upholding the Marine Corps standards-from materials to plumbing to lighting and amenities-wasn't a challenge, because ModSpace's standards are equally high." ModSpace also recently completed Phase II, a Training and Education Command (TECOM) office space and which includes a 36,000 square-foot administrative building consisting of 47 modular units. A 5,000 square-foot portion of the building was specified and certified as SIPRNET (secure internet) area with a design built to suit the specific needs of USMC.
