Facilitating renovation

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

pentagon officeWhen the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers needed to renovate administrative space in the Pentagon, ModSpace had the answer. Built during World War II, the Pentagon was designed to be an efficient and self-sustaining community. Currently the largest low-rise office building in the world, the Pentagon contains its own heating and refrigeration plant, medical facilities, a shopping mall, dining and athletic facilities. After nearly 50 years of use, the Pentagon's once efficient design had become outdated and was in desperate need of an overhaul. A complete renovation of the facilities is scheduled to be finished by the year 2002.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for the renovation of the Pentagon. With planning scheduled to continue through each phase of the 10-year renovation, it was critical to establish a temporary office facility in close proximity to the Pentagon. The Corps of Engineers took an imaginative approach and called on ModSpace to provide a modular complex.

ModSpace can quickly respond to customer needs. With a cost-effective solution for office space, ModSpace provided the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with a 25 unit modular building totaling 18,000 square feet which was installed at the north end of the Pentagon's parking lot. The buildings were delivered, erected and ready for occupancy within 142 days of the receipt of the order. In addition, ModSpace provided full turnkey services including site work, landscaping, paving, as well as the installation of steps, decks, ramps, walkways, a five-zone split HVAC system and a wet sprinkler system.

"I knew what to expect," says Anthony Leketa, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, "But others were surprised with the professional appearance of the buildings, inside and out."

Other modules also provide office space for the professional staff of engineers, architects, schedulers, cost estimators, designers, a lawyer, and a contract person.

The cost of conventional buildings can be staggering as is the possibility of lengthy delays and unexpected problems. By utilizing a relocatable modular complex, the Corps of Engineers was able to quickly establish office space near the Pentagon. Modulars offer complete flexibility and, in this case, the Corps of Engineers was able to add another 10 modules totaling 5,900 square feet of additional office space to its complex as the renovation staff expanded. The Corps of Engineers' innovative use of ModSpace buildings provided attractive and efficient space quickly.
