Holy Cross High School

2008 MBI Award Winning Project - Temporary Education Category

Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, LA needed to be replaced after the area was completely devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The campus, like the majority of the city, was flooded by the levee failures on the Industrial Canal and the levee "over-topped" by storm surge along the Mississippi Gulf Outlet that destroyed St. Bernard Parish and Eastern New Orleans and Greater New Orleans.

The school is a piece of New Orleans history as the school has been in continuous operation for almost 130 years! It was important to maintain the level of quality the students and faculty expect, as well as complete the project in a short amount of time.

The timeline for the project was very tight. The school had to be ready for occupation by August 1 and the approval for the project was not finalized until June 1. Modular construction was chosen because of time and budget constraints.

The project consists of: 13) 28' x 60' classrooms 14' x 60' each; (1) 28' x 60' modular laboratory 14' x 60' each; (2) 28' x 60' modular offices 14' x 60' each; (1) 32' x 60' modular library 16' x 68' each; (1) 32' x 60' modular cafeteria 16' x 60' each.

The project also includes some interesting features including: twenty-four sets of stairs with steel rails and over 22,000 feet of elevated walkways.

The buildings are on a six-foot high foundation and are part of a complete campus with football field and landscaping. The total size of the project is 30,976 sq. ft. and the total length of the job was only 75 days.

In addition to the many projects ModSpace has delivered in the gulf region, the company continues to support post-Katrina rebuilding efforts with the 2008 sponsorship of Tour du Rouge, a 495 bicycle tour benefitting American Red Cross chapters in the gulf region.
